What are my Africa safari options?

You can choose guided group safaris, exclusive private safaris, budget camping adventures, or ultra-luxury lodge experiences. Safari Options provides comprehensive listings and customized packages across all major African destinations to match your preferences and budget.

How do I book a safari tour through Safari Options?

Browse our curated listings on Safari Options, select your preferred tour or accommodation, and submit a tailor-made enquiry or contact the operator directly. Our platform connects you with vetted safari operators who handle all arrangements including transfers, guides, park permits, and special requests. Use our Trip Planner tool to outline your ideal itinerary and receive custom quotes.

Can I customize my safari itinerary?

Absolutely. We specialize in bespoke safari packages. Tell us your preferred destinations, activities, accommodation style, budget, and group size, and our affiliated operators will design a personalized itinerary. From Masai Mara migration timing to gorilla trekking permits in Bwindi, every detail is tailored to your requirements.

How far in advance should I book a safari?

We recommend booking 6-12 months ahead, especially for peak season travel (July-October) or gorilla trekking permits which sell out quickly. Last-minute bookings are possible for shoulder seasons. Popular destinations like Botswana's Okavango Delta and Rwanda for gorillas require the most lead time due to limited capacity.

Can I get a refund if I cancel my safari booking?

Cancellation policies vary by operator and tour. Most bookings allow full refunds 60+ days before travel, partial refunds 30-60 days out, and minimal refunds within 30 days. Always review the specific tour's cancellation policy before booking. We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance to cover unexpected cancellations.

Do you offer travel insurance for safaris?

We strongly recommend all travelers obtain comprehensive travel insurance covering trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and emergency evacuations. Medical evacuation from remote safari areas can cost tens of thousands of dollars without coverage. Many of our partner operators can recommend reputable travel insurance providers.

What is the best safari destination in Africa?

The 'best' destination depends on your goals. Kenya's Masai Mara offers unrivalled big cat sightings and the Great Migration. Tanzania's Serengeti is the world's most iconic safari landscape. Botswana is the gold standard for exclusive, eco-sensitive luxury safaris. South Africa's Kruger National Park is ideal for self-drive safaris. Rwanda and Uganda are the top gorilla trekking destinations. Zimbabwe's Hwange and Mana Pools offer raw, crowd-free wilderness. Each destination offers something unique.

What is Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve?

The Masai Mara is Kenya's most celebrated safari destination, sharing an ecosystem with Tanzania's Serengeti. It's globally famous for the annual Great Migration (July-October) when over 1.5 million wildebeest cross the Mara River. Year-round, the Mara hosts exceptional concentrations of lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, and buffalo. Hot air balloon safaris above the golden savanna at dawn are among Africa's most iconic experiences.

What is Tanzania's Serengeti National Park?

The Serengeti is Tanzania's flagship national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 14,763 km². It hosts Africa's greatest wildlife spectacle — the annual wildebeest migration — as well as year-round populations of lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, and over 500 bird species. The northern Serengeti (near the Mara River) is prime for witnessing dramatic river crossings between July and October.

What makes Botswana's Okavango Delta special?

The Okavango Delta is the world's largest inland delta — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Okavango River fans out into the Kalahari Desert creating a lush oasis. It offers some of Africa's most exclusive and diverse wildlife experiences: mokoro (dugout canoe) safaris through papyrus channels, walking safaris across floodplains, and game drives in areas supporting huge elephant herds, lions, leopards, wild dogs, and massive buffalo herds. Botswana's low-volume, high-value tourism model ensures an uncrowded, pristine experience.

What can I see on safari in South Africa?

South Africa offers incredibly diverse safari experiences. The Kruger National Park — one of Africa's largest game reserves — provides excellent Big Five game viewing alongside 500+ bird species. Private game reserves bordering Kruger (Sabi Sands, Thornybush, Timbavati) offer malaria-free luxury with world-class leopard sightings. Addo Elephant National Park near Port Elizabeth specializes in enormous elephant herds. The Western Cape offers whale watching and birdlife, while KwaZulu-Natal's iSimangaliso Wetlands host hippos and crocodiles.

Can I see gorillas on an African safari?

Yes! Mountain gorilla trekking is one of Africa's most profound wildlife experiences. Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park are the top destinations, home to roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorilla population. Permits must be booked well in advance (6-12 months). Trekking involves hiking through dense rainforest for 1-8 hours to spend one precious hour with a habituated gorilla family.

What is the best safari destination in East Africa?

East Africa is Africa's premier safari region. Kenya and Tanzania together host the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem — Earth's greatest wildlife spectacle. For the Great Migration, fly into Nairobi (Kenya) or Arusha (Tanzania). Uganda and Rwanda offer gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in lush rainforest. Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater is the world's densest Big Five concentration in a natural amphitheatre. The East African coast (Zanzibar, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam) offers perfect beach extensions after your safari.

What is Southern Africa's best safari destination?

Southern Africa delivers extraordinary safari diversity. Botswana's Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park offer exclusive, pristine wilderness. Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park hosts Africa's largest elephant population. Zambia's South Luangwa is the birthplace of the walking safari with outstanding leopard sightings. Namibia offers desert-adapted wildlife including desert lions and elephants in Etosha and Damaraland. Combining Zambia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe into a circuit safari is extremely rewarding.

What wildlife will I see on an African safari?

African safaris feature iconic wildlife including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, cape buffalo, white and black rhinoceros, hippos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and hundreds of antelope species. Predator interactions — lion hunts, leopards in trees, cheetah sprints — are among the most thrilling spectacles in nature. Africa hosts over 2,300 bird species making it a birdwatcher's paradise. Wildlife sightings depend on destination, season, and habitat.

What is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is the world's largest terrestrial wildlife movement — over 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebras, and 500,000 gazelles migrate in a continuous 800km circuit between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara following seasonal rains and fresh grass. The most dramatic moments are the Mara River crossings (July-October) where massive herds plunge into crocodile-infested waters. This is widely regarded as the greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth.

What are the Big Five animals on safari?

The Big Five — lion, leopard, African elephant, Cape buffalo, and rhinoceros — are Africa's most iconic safari animals. The term originated from hunters who considered them the most dangerous to hunt on foot. Today it's used to describe the five most sought-after species on safari. South Africa's Kruger, Kenya's Masai Mara, and Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater offer the best Big Five sighting opportunities, though spotting all five on a single safari is never guaranteed.

What are the best safari activities beyond game drives?

Modern safaris offer far more than vehicle game drives. Walking safaris provide intimate encounters with tracks, insects, and the bush's smaller wonders. Hot air balloon flights over the Masai Mara or Serengeti at dawn are transformative. Night game drives reveal nocturnal predators: leopards, civets, genets, and aardvarks. Cultural visits to Maasai, Samburu, or San Bushmen villages provide human context to the landscape. Mokoro canoe safaris in the Okavango Delta, boat safaris on the Chobe River, and gorilla trekking in Uganda offer truly unique perspectives.

What is a hot air balloon safari?

Hot air balloon safaris are among Africa's most extraordinary experiences. Flights launch at dawn and drift silently over wildlife-rich landscapes for approximately 1 hour, offering aerial perspectives impossible from ground level. The Masai Mara and Serengeti are the most popular locations. You'll see game herds, migration columns, and vast savanna from 300-600m altitude. Flights typically include a champagne bush breakfast upon landing. Advance booking is essential.

What is a walking safari?

Walking safaris, pioneered in Zambia's South Luangwa Valley, are the most immersive way to experience the African bush. Led by expert armed guides, you walk through wildlife areas interpreting tracks, identifying plants and insects, and occasionally encountering large animals on foot. The experience engages all senses and creates an intimacy with the landscape impossible from a vehicle. Walking safaris typically last 2-4 hours and require moderate fitness.

What are the best African destinations for bird watching?

Africa hosts over 2,300 bird species making it an unrivalled birding destination. Uganda's Bwindi and Kibale forests harbour dozens of endemic species including the African Green Broadbill. Tanzania's Serengeti and Ngorongoro offer magnificent raptors and migrant species. Kenya's Masai Mara sees over 500 species. South Africa's varied habitats — fynbos, wetlands, Bushveld — support 900+ species. Ethiopia's Bale Mountains protect unique Afro-alpine endemics. Zambia and Botswana's river systems attract extraordinary waterbirds.

What is the best time to go on an African safari?

The dry season (June-October) is generally considered peak safari season across most of sub-Saharan Africa. Water sources shrink, forcing wildlife to concentrate at rivers and waterholes, making game viewing exceptional. The Great Migration Mara River crossings peak July-September. However, the green season (November-May) offers lush landscapes, newborn animals, abundant birdlife, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Some destinations like Botswana's Okavango Delta are actually best flooded (June-July) when water levels peak.

Do I need a visa to visit African safari countries?

Visa requirements vary significantly by country and nationality. Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda now offer e-visa applications online. Rwanda offers free entry to many nationalities. South Africa allows visa-free entry to most Western passport holders for up to 90 days. Botswana offers visa-free entry to most nationalities. Always check requirements 3-6 months before travel via your destination country's embassy or official immigration website, as policies change frequently.

What vaccinations do I need for an African safari?

Required and recommended vaccinations vary by destination. Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory for entry to Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania if arriving from endemic countries, and strongly recommended for Kenya and Tanzania. Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, rabies, and meningococcal vaccines are widely recommended. Malaria prophylaxis is essential for most safari destinations except South Africa's Western Cape and parts of the Eastern Cape. Consult a travel health clinic 6-8 weeks before departure.

What should I pack for an African safari?

Pack neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, tan, beige) in lightweight fabrics for hot days and warm layers for cool mornings and evenings. Essential items: quality binoculars, SPF 50+ sunscreen, insect repellent (DEET-based), a wide-brimmed hat, sturdy comfortable shoes, a headlamp, and any personal medications. For photography, bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a 100-400mm telephoto lens plus a wide-angle lens for landscapes. Avoid bright whites and blues which can disturb wildlife and attract insects.

How long should my safari trip be?

A minimum of 5-7 days is recommended for a satisfying safari experience, allowing time to settle in and encounter diverse wildlife. For multiple destinations (e.g., Masai Mara plus Serengeti, or Botswana plus Zimbabwe), plan 10-14 days. Gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda pairs beautifully with a Kenyan or Tanzanian safari on a 10-12 day itinerary. Shorter 3-4 day safaris work well as extensions from a longer African trip.

What documents do I need for safari travel?

Essential travel documents: passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date with 2+ blank pages, visas for all destination countries, yellow fever vaccination certificate (required for many East African countries), travel insurance documents, flight confirmations, lodge booking confirmations, and emergency contact information. Keep digital copies stored in cloud storage and email. Some parks require photographic ID for entry.

Is it safe to go on safari in Africa?

Safari travel in Africa is generally very safe when booked through reputable operators and following guide instructions. Wildlife encounters are managed by experienced professionals trained in animal behaviour and emergency protocols. The greatest risks are typically road accidents and health issues (malaria, waterborne illness) — both mitigated with preparation. Political situations vary by country; always check your government's travel advisories and purchase comprehensive travel insurance with emergency evacuation cover.

How much does an African safari cost?

Safari costs span a huge range. Budget camping safaris in Tanzania or Kenya start from $150-300 per person per day including accommodation, meals, and game drives. Mid-range lodge safaris range $300-600 per person per day. High-end luxury safari lodges cost $600-1,500+ per person per day with all-inclusive service. Exclusive private game reserves in Botswana and South Africa can reach $2,000+ per person per night. Group tours (6-12 people) offer the best value; private custom safaris deliver the ultimate tailored experience.

What is included in safari tour prices?

Most mid-range and luxury safari packages include accommodation, all meals, twice-daily game drives with professional guides, park/conservancy entrance fees, and airport transfers. What's typically excluded: international flights, visas, travel insurance, optional activities (balloon flights, gorilla permits), laundry, and alcoholic beverages (sometimes). Always request a detailed inclusions list before booking to understand your true total cost.

When is the cheapest time to go on safari?

The green or low season (March-May and November) offers discounts of 20-40% at most lodges. You'll find fewer tourists and excellent bird watching during these periods. Tanzania's Serengeti sees the wildebeest calving season (January-March) — spectacular with predator action — at lower prices. The primary trade-off is less predictable weather and thicker vegetation making some wildlife harder to spot. South Africa's Kruger Park is exceptional and affordable year-round.

How much should I budget for tips on safari?

Tipping is an important part of safari culture and a significant part of staff income. For lodge safaris, budget approximately $10-20 per person per day for your guide/tracker team, $3-5 per day for lodge housekeeping/waiting staff. On camping safaris, $5-10 per day total for camp staff is appropriate. Private guides command higher gratuities ($15-25 per day). Many lodges provide tip envelopes; ask management for guidance if uncertain.
