About Kibale National Park
Kibale National Park is the undisputed chimpanzee capital of the world — a magnificent tropical rainforest in western Uganda that protects approximately 1,500 chimpanzees, the largest population of this species in Uganda. With 13 species of primates — more than any other protected area in East Africa — Kibale is a primate lover's paradise.
Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale is considered the finest in all of Africa. The habituated chimp communities of Kanyanchu are very well accustomed to human presence, allowing for relaxed, extended, and very close encounters. Unlike mountain gorilla encounters (limited to 1 hour), chimp tracking permits allow up to 2 hours with the chimps.
Beyond chimpanzees, the park's other primates include red colobus, black-and-white colobus, L'Hoest's monkey, red-tailed monkey, olive baboon, and grey-cheeked mangabey. Over 375 bird species have been recorded, and the forest itself — a remarkable cathedral of ancient trees — is spectacular to walk through.

What is the difference between chimp tracking and gorilla trekking?
Both involve following guides through forest to find habituated primates. Chimpanzees are much more active and move quickly — tracking involves following them through the forest. Gorilla trekking allows 1 hour with the gorillas; chimp tracking allows up to 2 hours. Chimps are noisier and more energetic — a completely different but equally thrilling experience.
How do I get to Kibale National Park?
Kibale is approximately 370 km from Kampala — about 5–6 hours by road via Fort Portal. Charter flights from Entebbe to Kasese airstrip (near Queen Elizabeth) are the most efficient option, with a 45-minute drive to Kibale. Most western Uganda circuits combine Kibale with Queen Elizabeth and/or Bwindi.
Are chimp tracking permits easy to book?
Chimp tracking permits for Kibale cost USD 250 per person and should be booked in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a licensed operator. Kibale has more permits available than Bwindi, so availability is generally better, but advance booking is still recommended especially in peak season.
