Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Golden monkeys, mountain gorillas, and the dramatic Virunga volcanoes — a compact jewel in Uganda's southwestern highlands.

About Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda's smallest national park at just 33.7 square kilometres, but what it lacks in size it more than compensates for in dramatic scenery and extraordinary wildlife. Nestled in the Virunga Mountains of southwestern Uganda, the park encompasses three of the eight Virunga volcanoes — Mount Muhavura (4,127m), Mount Gahinga (3,474m), and Mount Sabyinyo (3,669m).

Mgahinga is one of only two places in Uganda where you can trek mountain gorillas (the other being Bwindi). However, the park is particularly famous for golden monkey tracking — these rare, brilliantly coloured monkeys found only in the Virunga volcanoes can be tracked on a daily basis at Mgahinga with exceptional success rates.

The park also offers Batwa cultural experiences — guided walks with the Batwa people (the original forest inhabitants of the Virungas) that provide deeply moving insights into their traditional forest lifestyle. Volcano hikes to the summits offer breathtaking views over Rwanda, DRC, and Uganda simultaneously.
