Akagera National Park

Rwanda's only savanna park and Big Five destination — lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, and hippo restored to the beautiful lake-studded plains on the Tanzania border.

About Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park is Rwanda's only savanna national park and one of Africa's most inspiring conservation comeback stories. Managed by African Parks since 2010, Akagera has been transformed from a severely degraded reserve into a thriving Big Five ecosystem on Rwanda's eastern border with Tanzania.

Lion were reintroduced in 2015, black rhino in 2017 and 2021 — and both are now breeding successfully. The park is home to elephant, buffalo, leopard, hippo, zebra, topi, impala, eland, giraffe, and crocodile, with wildlife populations growing rapidly. The beautiful Lake Ihema — Rwanda's second largest lake — supports extraordinary waterbird concentrations and superb boat safaris.

With over 500 recorded bird species including the sought-after shoebill stork in the papyrus swamps, Akagera is also one of East Africa's premier birding destinations. A Rwanda Akagera safari perfectly complements gorilla trekking in Volcanoes NP — offering a complete East African wildlife experience within a single small country.
