About Nyungwe Forest National Park
Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa's oldest, largest, and most biodiverse montane rainforests — a 970 square kilometre expanse of ancient forest in southwestern Rwanda that has survived largely intact for millions of years. Its extraordinary ecological richness supports 13 primate species — more than almost any other protected area in Africa.
The park is home to approximately 500 chimpanzees in multiple habituated communities, along with colobus monkey troops numbering up to 400 individuals — among the largest primate groups on the continent. Olive baboons, L'Hoest's monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and blue monkeys are also reliably seen.
Nyungwe's famous canopy walkway — suspended 50 metres above the forest floor across a series of bridges — is considered Africa's finest. Over 310 bird species have been recorded, including 29 Albertine Rift endemics, making Nyungwe a world-class birding destination. The forest is also the source of the Nile — a fact that adds extraordinary historical significance to this ancient wilderness.
