About Gishwati-Mukura National Park
Gishwati-Mukura National Park is Rwanda's newest and smallest national park, gazetted in 2015, and represents one of Africa's most remarkable forest restoration stories. Located in northwestern Rwanda between Lake Kivu and the Congo-Nile Divide, the park comprises two separate forest fragments — Gishwati (1,442 ha) and Mukura (792 ha) — that are being reconnected through active replanting.
Gishwati was devastated after 1994, when large numbers of displaced people settled in the forest and cleared most of it for agriculture and settlement. Less than 600 ha of forest remained by the early 2000s. Through extraordinary conservation efforts — replanting over a million trees — the forest is recovering, and with it, its wildlife.
Chimpanzees have returned to Gishwati as the forest has grown, and a habituation programme is underway. Golden monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, black-and-white colobus, and L'Hoest's monkeys are all present. With over 232 bird species including numerous Albertine Rift endemics, Gishwati-Mukura is emerging as an exciting and meaningful destination on Rwanda's growing safari circuit.
